The UDU diesel I have seen had a diesel starter in the crankcase (held on by 3 bolts) but still had a govenor hole in the side of the crankcase. The hole was coverd by a plate and had a slug in the hole to direct the oil around where the govenor shaft would have been. THis is similar to the early GTBD setup. If you look at serial #s you will notice that UDU was made in 52 but most if not all UBU diesels were made in 54 looks like it took them a year to get the later engine into production.
