The story as I've heard it, the 283 diesel motor was built for the new UB tractors but the engines were ready ahead of the rest of the UB components. So, MM choose to introduce the new diesel engine with a limited production run of UTUs with the engine and called them UDUs. 30 were built which was enough for MM to learn that the 283 gas engine crank was not strong enough for the diesel version. Many (possibly all) UDUs were retro fitted with the heavier crank that came out in the later 283 diesels for the UBUs.
