This was a post I made regarding installing a water drain in the bottom of the steering gear box of a Ford 4500 Backhoe.
the spiral on my worm gear and nut were OK but the ball races machined into the shaft were toast. I could have gotten new 3/8 inch ball bearings but had no way to repair the shaft so I went with an aftermarket nut and shaft from a aftermarket dealer in Winnsboro TX who imports them from Turkey. Have you searched the web for your part? Sometimes you will see them in the oddest places. An antique collector in NJ was selling a similar one to the one I needed for 65 bucks or 3400 bucks. I guess that makes sense. When I got the aftermarket part I still had to modify spacers and shimming bigtime and grind and polish the forks to get it into the original gearbox. The part I got was rough to say the least. I have also noticed very poor hardening on many aftermarket parts even ones from "reputable" sources.
