Anybody have any good ideas of how to restore the steering gear worm shaft on a UTU? The steering worm bearing surface on my tractor is shot.
The bearings seem to be obsolete [JT9202,JT9201]. Can"t find an interchange or even any bearings like it in the Timken catalog. Tempted to turn the shaft down so that a standard tapered roller bearing will fit. The problem is that the O.D. of the original bearing cup (Timken 32-C) is an oddball size. I would probably have to machine the adjusting plug and the front casting to hold different bearing cup and I don"t know if that could even be done.
I haven"t checked, but I hope the standard bearings and cups are available from agco. Are they? Altho that would still leave me with a steering worm with bad bearing surfaces.
Just hoping somebody has a good idea to fix this problem with modern, obtainable bearings. This is a work tractor, so looking for something that will hold up.
TIP OF THE DAY-- The front steering gear box on those UTU"s were a horrible design. Water gets in, and pushes the oil out. On my other 2 UTU"s I drilled and tapped for a petcock drain in the front lower portion of the steering oil resivoir. Once every couple months I open it up and drain out a table spoon of water.
Thanks for reading, if any body has any suggestions I would appreciate it.
