Joe:

I too have a Super 90 and it's probably the best pulling, best running most fuel efficient tractor of it's size (my completely biased opinion only). I bought the tractor three years ago and like you had never heard or seen one before, but the price was right and the green tractors that I looked at were half the horsepower and twice the price so I rolled the dice and bought the old girl. I did have to rebuild the engine right away because it was using more oil than fuel. Parts are getting hard to find, but I do know a place where you can still get some of the hard to find items; sounds like your engine is fine though.

While I had the engine apart I did get a good look at the clutch and the lines that run back into the transmission. Your power steering return line goes into the transmission and is where you get the hydraulic power to lock your PTO clutch up. If your power steering pump ever goes out (like mine has) you will loose your PTO. Mine left me while I was baling hay and everytime I turned the steering wheel the baler would quit. Anyway, your leak could be there. As one other gentleman posted to you, your PTO dump valve is also located right at the clutch. This valve stops the PTO when you press the clutch ALL the way down. I'm sure you know it, but you don't have to use the clutch to engage or disengage the PTO unless you're using the ground drive (full aft)feature of your PTO system.

I would check to see if you are loosing PTO by hooking it to something substantial and seeing if the old girl will keep it turning. If you are loosing much pressure, chances are that the PTO will stop turning. If not, the dump valve would be my next guess. You can see it but I believe, (I'm not positive on this one) you will have to pull the oil pan and then you should be able so see it right there around the clutch. WARNING: be careful with that oil pan it is HEAVY!!!

Other than that, I would suspect a bad seal around the transmission input shaft. If someone put the wrong type of fluid in the transmission, it could have caused your seals to get soft and start leaking. Although if that's the case, you should have other leaks as well, like around the PTO output shaft.

Good luck with you tractor, if you enjoy it half as much as I do my old girl you'll be happy for years to come.

Let me know via e-mail how it goes. I'm always interested in hearing about other 90's.

Today's Featured Article - It Can't Be Done! - A Tractor Story - by Neil Campbell. I'll never forget the time back when I was a boy baling hay on our Farm in Big Rapid, Michigan. The most memorable event that took place was a trip up the steepest incline on the farm pulling an old New-Idea baler with a pony-motor for power and a haywagon. I had just talked my Dad into buying an old John Deere B with 6-speeds ahead and I was real proud of it, except it was a little smaller than the Case tractor that we normally ... [Read Article]
