rkh, trust me, you need to get the leak stopped first, but there was a spring and washer in there at one time.
procedure: insert the bolt with rubber gaskets into the canister then the spring, then the washer, then filter.
the spring forces downward pressure on the oil filter and keeps it tight against the tractor block.
if you do not have the spring and washer inside the oil filter canister, the oil filter can just flow up/down the center bolt, your oil will go around the filter, not through the filter.
without the washer/spring you in effect have no oil filter.
but, you must get the oil filter canister to stop leaking first, then worry about the spring and washer.
what happens: when draining the oil out of the oil filter canister, the filter falls off and the spring and washer slide off into the oil and no one checks to be sure they are back inside the canister.
I got my spring and washer at the local Massey Ferguson dealer, they had to order them.
many have changed over to a spin on filter, but I use my tractor, sometimes in the woods and I have had limb pop up under the tires and hit the oil filter canister as it is mounted low on the side of the tractor. you could slash a spin on filter and lose oil pressure in a minute and you never know it.
