I just installed an alternator and wired mine like yours except for ammeter. White excite wire to Acc term on 4 position Sw. Red sense wire back to battery term on Sw or in my case battery side solenoid. Should amount to same thing in the end. Large red wire on Alt + to battery or in my case to the lug where the battery + cable runs to. Same thing in the end. You have an ammeter is the only difference, Sure your battery is not fully charged? Check you voltage across batt terms with engine running and not running. If it is not charging volts will be the same. If it is charging you should see at least 13 volts or more. You will find most all wiring diaphragms with sense wire hooked up wrong according to what GM did. You want to read the volts back at where the load is taken from. Good luck.
