Gearhead hit it, there is a wire from the big terminal on the solenoid that carries power to the instument cluster. Trace that wire end to end and insure that is making good contact. Also, while not directly tied to your problem, check the two fuses on the dash. BTW, when it started after you shorted the solenoid out that was an indication that your solenoid was OK. Replace the ignition switch and clean the connections, double check the battery connections at BOTH ends and you "should" be good. Otherwise you'll need a wiring diagram and start chasing wires.
