You can make a washer out of a piece of a margarine container top..the plastic is durable and is almost identical to what you will get from the auto supply house. I've done it on my old truck and that home made washer has been there for about 3 years now. Copper is probably the bestif you don't trust plastic. Mike, I'm retired and I'm a cheapskate too. Drop me a line !
