You all pretty much covered the differences between the 44 , 46 and 4840 . As far as pulling goes the 46 stripped of all weights and brackets , smaller tires on front , 10 gals fuel and a light driver could make 14,500 on most scales . It pulled much better in 16 to 18,000 classes though . Mine was a quad range . I used to open the pump one thread from all the way in , run it at 29-3000 rpm , B-2 and it was hard to beat in a 16-18 class . Don't know what hp it had but ran it 200-210 for farming .
I sold it to a neghbor a couple years ago and bought another neighbors '82 4840 at his auction , I wanted a powershift because it was handier I think . My 46 was an '81 . The 15sp wauld be better I know but I get along pretty good with the 8sp . With the quad I used B2 and C2 most of the time and 4th and 5th are almost the same speed . I also have three other 8sp Powershifts .
The 48 will strip down to about 15,100 , but it like the 46 pulls way better at 16-18 . When you strip those big tractors all the weight comes off the rear and that's where you really need it for those long tractors .
As far as I'm concerned the 44 , 46 and 4840 series were the best tractors Deere ar anyone else ever built .
