The 4640 is intercooled, the 4440 is not. The 4640 is a large-frame tractor, the 4440 is not. Frame refers to the clutch housing on back, not the width between the frame rails. 4640 has a larger hyd pump, rockshaft, etc. The list of small differences goes on and on. Both were available either as quad-range tractors or powershifts. 4840 tractors are only available as powershifts. Fuel tank is also larger on a 4640 than a 4440. Powershift 4640s will use a larger clutch pack, brake pack, differential, final drives, axles etc. The load shaft (3 pt. hitch) will also be larger. Basically, the 4640 is a completely different animal all around. 4640 and 4840 are much closer to being the same tractor than 4440 and 4640. I hope this helped you some.
