I'm not sure which seal you are talking about, but the bottom seal can be replaced by removing the flywheel and prying out the old seal. You don't have to pull the shaft. The flywheel can be removed by pulling the tapered key, then drift off the flywheel with some wedges. If you can't get the key out (I never can) heat up the flywheel a little and try drifting them both off together. This has worked for me. I thnk there are some other suggestions in the archives.
