Silly me, I forgot your VR question, heres how to tell which post is which on a good working VR using an ohm meter.
Put one lead to the case frame on the VR,,,,,
The BAT terminal should show no continuity (an open circuit) The FLD terminal should show low resistance to case frame, maybe zero to 3 or 4 ohms The GEN/ARM terminal may show 20 to 50 or so ohms
