Hi I looked at a 4020 last year for a guy that was the same symptoms you have. I looked at it but never got the job. Guy just wanted me out there to say what the problem was. Then adjusted me with a large screwdriver and fixed it himself on the cheap.
It looked to me as if one of the selector disc in the syncro on the top shaft had worn and dropped down in the gap. There was 3 i think, of 4 discs that where loose and one so tight you could not move it. it appeared it was stuck between gears as the syncro would not come back to neutral. The tractor stalled dead on him in the field when he changed gear from what i remember him saying . I talked to another guy after this was fixed that new this clown. He told me that the pressure lube/charge pump had quit, and the tractor had been running for about 10 years the guy owned it with no feed to the top shaft, It was all worn out and had to be re built.
It turns out somebody cleaned all the filings out the trans changed the oil/ filter and sold it at auction, and kept quiet about the issues.
Ask the previous owner if the hyds did funny things when you tried to steer push the breaks and use a spool at the same time. that can be a bad sign there is trouble in the charge pump. steering and stuff is priority on that tractor. if it messes about it means the rest of the system is not getting proper oil supply to the front pump. I hope this tractor was cheap as im kinda frightened what you might find in the filters and stuff. Good luck Regards Robert

Today's Featured Article - Madison's County - by Anthony West. Philip Madison has been a good friend of mine for quite some time. He has patiently suffered my incessant chit chat on the subject of tractors for longer than I care to remember, and on many occasions he has put himself out, dropped what ever it was he was doing, to come and lend a hand cranking handles, or loading a find onto a trailer. Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects.
