I removed one shift collar & pin(parts keys 27 & 29),1000 rpm drive gear(parts key #33) & all the shifter rod components inside pto shaft except the screw(parts key 40A/40B). I inserted in the slots the largest diameter bolt with locking nut on each side of 540 drive gear(parts key #32) along with correct number of shim washers to hold 540 drive gear in correct position with one shift collar(parts key #29) to power 540 gear. One also needs to remove stub shaft and install a welch plug to keep oil from leaking out of drive shaft and then reinstall stub shaft. I altered several tractors such as I stated back when I was a JD dealer service manager and never had a customer complaint.
Tim S stated he built something to hold 540 gear in correct place.
