Lee -- The real significance of serial numbers with John Deere tractors is in procurement of spare or replacement parts. If you have a parts catalog for any John Deere tractor, take a look through the pages and you will (in many places) two and perhaps more part numbers for the same reference item. What makes the part number versus serial number important is to identify the actual part that goes with a particlular tractor. Even with your Parts Tractor, it is important insofar as knowing which tractors the parts in your Parts Tractor are good for.

Now, as you can begin to surmise, you can narrow down the serial number range your tractor belongs in by checking part numbers of various items that were changed at various serial number points in production. Also -- someone out there in YT Forum Land has a skinny sheet on the Styled JD-B tractors which describes different points when major features came in or went out.
