The old coupling had barely a perceptible movement relative to
either the top or bottom shaft and reversing it didn't make much
if any difference. One could tell that the new coupling was
tighter on the splines and eliminated almost all, if not all,
relative motion. I wouldn't rely on the pin through this coupling
to take out any wobble. It's just there to keep the front wheels
from falling out! I too cross drilled and put a bolt through the
telescoping mechanism after trying to fix it by using a bigger
steel ball. That hepled for a while but finally came loose too.
You are aware of the end play adjusting set screw on top of the
worm gear housing I trust. I adjusted that with the front wheels
jacked up. It gets tighter at the extreme ends of it's travel so
don't get it too toght. When I got my coupling from the dealer,
he said I could return it for their normal 15% restocking fee, so
that would have taken some of the sting out of it in case it
hadn't helped. I know of a guy who sawed through one side of
the coupling, squeezed it doen, rewelded it and fixed it that way.
I really couldn't see or feel any spline wear on my shafts but
thought I could see some inside the old coupling, but then of
course being internal, I couldn't get in there with a thumb nail to
feel. My guess is that the shafts had a higher hardness spec
than did the couplings. Good thing for as I recall the either
shafts aren't available or are prohibitively expensive.

Today's Featured Article - Fire in the Field A hay fire is no laughing matter-well, maybe one was! And a good life-lesson, too. Following World War II many farm boys returned home both older and wiser. One such man was my employer the summer I was sixteen. He was a farmer by birth and a farmer by choice, and like many returning soldiers, he was our silent hero: without medals or decorations, but with a certain ability to survive. It was on his farm that I learned to use the combination hand clutch and brake on a John D ... [Read Article]
