Larry-In, I have the same tractor with FWA and use it for roto-tilling (5 ft.), snow-blowing (5 ft.), power broom (6 ft.), bushhogging (5 ft HD), loader work with # 75 loader, and general pulling. It has a turbocharged Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel engine, with the turbo being an expensive (well over $1k) item to repair/replace should it be required. The oil seals on the turbo can be damaged from not cooling down sufficiently after use, which can be seen as an external oil leak down the side of the engine block below the turbo. Of note, the 1050 has the same size clutch disk as the less powerful 950. That said, the larger engine (mine dyno'd at 40HP, 6.5HP more than rated) can easily overtax the clutch, causing it to burn and slip. This is not an uncommon problem with these tractors, particularly those that have been used heavily with PTO powered attachments. Replacing the clutch requires splitting the tractor, not an inexpensive job if you take it to a JD authorized service center. If the tractor is in good shape, with no signs of being abused, it is a terrific unit for the jobs I have itemized above. With the turbo, be religious about cooling the engine down several minutes after hard use. To not do so will lead to premature damage to the turbo, not to mention the rest of the engine too. 1050's were never common, and command a healthy resale price, always a plus whenever you wish to part with it.

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
