You are going to have to pay the very modest fee for the JD parts and service manual. That way you will be ordering the proper gear. And you will know what clearances and torque values to use. That shaft AR 1177R is likely worn on the splines for both the 20 tooth pinion drive gear R1492R and the 3/6 gear if that one was used the most. The part numbers from an "R" R 85 R which subs to AR893R along with R 79R are similar. I would like to see the "R" and 80/820/830/840 gears/shafts side by side and measure them. I have an AR 1177R laying on the shed floor that we pulled out of the 80. It would need the splines built up in two gear locations before it could be re-used. The inside splines of those 3/6 and diff drive gears gears are pretty well ratted out as well. Just depending on how much noise you can tolerate. Who knows how long the old shaft/gears will work before something shears off? Maybe 20 more years. The trans lube back in those days particually when mixed with 10,20,30, 40 even 45+ years of dirt and condensated water/rain water. The lube didn't always keep an oil film between moving parts.
