The 316 engine is a B43E Kohler horizontal 2 cylinder that is not worth rebuilding. I have personnaly repowered several 316"s with a brand new complete Onan twin that is the same engine used on the 318. You can buy these at a great price from Tulsa small engine warehouse. You will get everything new including a starter, carb and an adapter kit for the 316. It is an easy replacement and looks original. You will fall in love all over again with the 316 with this new engine. See the following link, they have the best price on small engines that I have seen and they have tech notes for the conversion. You will find it quite expensive to properly rebuild your old engine, you might as well spend a little more and get a new one that is pressure lubed. If you have any questions I would be happy to help. Rex

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
