With a roller pump,you strain between the tank outlet and pump inlet. Keeps grit and whatever from getting between the close tolerance of the rotor and pump housing wall. With a centrifugal you strain after the pump. No close tolerances here,but a stopped up strainer on the suction side,you starve the pump, lip seal heats,warps and you start leaking out the weep hole on the pump shaft.
