The corn when cut for a shreader is still green in the stalk but the kernel on the ear is in dent stage but still about 25% moisture, whene cut for silo the kernel has not yet reached the dent stage and the moisture would be better than 30%. Corn for silage is August and depending on variety and planting date for shreading usually about mid September. No corn was waited till october to cut with a binder, at that time it would have been ripe and dry enough to pick and crib the ears. For silage it was chopped the day it was cut but for the shreader it sat for likely 2 monthe to cure out before shreading and that fodder made good dairy cow feed, the ears were seperated and cribbed for later feeding to cows in ground feed or to hogs or chickens. But it was never cut when dry.
