I'm working on a McCormick binder, and as far as restoration goes, all I can say is it's very rewarding. Spray any frozen bits with anti-sieze lube and be patient to let it soak before using a wrench. You'll find the old iron nuts'n' bolts undoe a lot easier than modern ones. Keep any rotted wood as a pattern for what you have to make. Same with the tin. Be patient if the knotter is froze, they don't like being hit with a hammer.:-) It's all straight forward really. Oh,... get a reprint of the book! (Setting up and operation) Can't begin to say how valuable the manual is.
