The older mowers used the square drive shafts but the newer mowers made since 1995 use the hex shafts. Also if you have a Splindimo or Vermeer 30 or 40 series mower it is advisable to drain the gear oil out and use EP-00 in the main gearbox once the warranty period is up. The EP grease worked fine in the Optimo mowers for 20 years and the newer gearbox. If a seal fails in the new style gearbox the oil will be gone in one minute and you have 3-5 minutes to discover this or the gearbox will toast. The EP-00 grease will not leak out like the gear oil and it will preserve your mower for many years of service.
