an end gate seeder replaces the tail gate on a wagon, which when first used was pulled by mules. the seeder is driven from a cog clamped on to the wheel of the wagon. there is a clutch on the seeder that takes it out of gear when turning or going from field to field. jd seeders had a second seed hopper that fit on top of the slinger mechanism that was used for small seed such as clover. if you had a good team you could just get them going and stand in the back of the wagon and scoop seed out of the wagon bed over into the hopper of the seeder or dump bags of seed over into the hopper and never have to stop to refill the hopper.
