Alfalfa is an expensive seed to learn to calibrate with. Also if you want to seed oats at the same pass you will not get a good stand as the different density, seed size and amount of seed per pound will not spread equally. Travel speed of the tractor is important, as well as PTO speed that determines width of seed pattern, soil prep, how many acres you want to do, and how good of a stand you hope to achieve. If a small acreage, or just for fun, and not worrying too much about cost and results, you can put a measured amount of seed in the seeder and close the gate WAY DOWN and experiment.There is 43,560 sq. ft. in an acre. See how far your measured amount of seed goes, at how wide of a pattern at an EXACT RPM and GROUND SPEED. Measure the width of the pattern, times the length of the pattern and get the square feet. Figure the quantity of seed used and adjust from there to get your desired rate. Record every detail. You may want to put the oats on with a seperate pass. You may even want to put half rate on with 2 passes on alfalfa to get a better stand. Depending on how detailed you want to be, there are more things to consider. Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
