I have a NI 3pt, pto driven rake. Uses a belt to get power from pto pulley to star wheel on front. I have had good results. Rake was old and fence row worn when I got it, had to replace many teeth over several years, and the belt. Otherwise, works excellently. 3pt mount is great, "cause you can pick up rake, and drive off the field when you finish. Also it makes very nice sweeping turns that are easy to follow with baler. I would not shy away from a belt drive on a rake. On raking, I usually follow the same swath pattern laid down by my sickle bar mower. Outside windrow, I turn in, then turn around and rake all other windrows outward. That leaves the first a windrow double, and I usually bale it last, so it has more time to dry.
