If your GT275 is anything like some other JD lawn tractors, the seat switch must be depressed (someone sitting on the seat), and the brake pedal must NOT be depressed. I have been troubleshooting a JD325 lately, and found that the circuit that powers the electric clutch is fused (on the 325 the PC board containing the fuse(s) is under the dash on the right side of the battery, accessible by removing the side panel). The seat switch and brake pedal switch both affect logic (a relay) on the PC board, which in turn allows voltage to be applied to the clutch switch on the dash if conditions are right. In the case of the 325 I have been troubleshooting, all switches are OK, but I get no voltage to the clutch switch on the dash... so the PC board is bad.
