MacKissic leaf shredder / Chipper

I have a MacKissic LSC 505 leaf shredder /Chipper, fitted with a 5hp Briggs and Stratton engine. I have not noticed any leaks but it seems to have developed some crankshaft play . ( It is not that old either! ) I am wondering if the engine does eventually die on me whether it is possible to replace it with a Honda or a Kawasaki of the same horsepower ( they never seem to go wrong do they! ) has anyone out there done that, and if so is it difficult?
