Engines were fine. Agree with Rick. The key is oil level and type. Sold many a Gravely with these engines. IF the owner kept the proper level and used 30w HD oil I can not remember one failure. BUT, let the oil go down, trouble. They just don't hold much,so when you lose some it makes a difference.Also we repaired JD's cause most of them were enclosed under covers. Made them look nice but raised the temp level around the engine. Higher temps-low oil, connecting rod time!!
