When eng cold & before starting check that valve cover gasket(s) not leaking & dripping on muffler causeing smoke till muffler gets hot, after that pull dipstick & check for an overfull oil level, smell oil on stick,if you smell gas in oil remove air filter & check for oil in filter/filter houseing, all the above are indications of a problem in carb possibly caused by a leaking float valve, sticking float or some other problem in carb,if valve leaking/float sticking gas will drain into crankcase when eng at rest, this will dilute oil/raise oil level, when eng started excess gas/oil mixture in crankcase will be blown out breather valve & into carb causeing smoke, this is a common problem on many mod ohv briggs eng.
Other possible causes of problem-as has been said wrong/too thin oil, worn valve guides/bad stem seals,ring/cyl wear & oil leaking past rings when eng cold & at rest, sticking rings, broken ring(s)head gasket(s) starting to leak when eng cold.
