Hi Do you mean you have a starter that has it's own solenoid, instead of the lever action original with separate solenoid?. I wonder if the drive gear arm is adjusted wrong and the solenoid engages the drive to late. on the old lever engage the motor would turn slightly as the gear engaged the fly wheel. if the engage switch was wrong the starter would grind the flywheel, trying to spin the gear in to late. If you got that new type mounted solenoid starter, the engage arm pivot bolt, might have a cam on it. if it does try turning that bolt and see if it gets worse or better depending where you turn the bolt. This is kinda hard to tell you without being there and seeing what you got, if that screw doesn't have the cam , the solenoid might have adjustment slots on the mounting,or on the linkage to the drive gear.
