Here are things to look for: 1. Does the engine rotate freely? not rusted up. 2. Are there welds on the block? 3. Is there oil and wetness from under the rear axle near the brake drums? axle bearings. 4. Is the coolant clean and green? 5. Does the transmission shift in gear positions?
There are not many parts you cannot find for a Dexta. If you rebuild the engine, it will take the rest of you life to wear it out again. However, the bad news is: you can fix everything on it, make it pretty, and you won"t get John Deere prices for it. However if you fix it and needed in the first place--you won"t want to sell it. For some reason the only profits seeming made on Dexta"s is from salvage buys to first sale. I have three Dexta"s and my best one was a salvage buy for nearly nothing. I rebuild my first one, my second one was a salvage buy with a locked engine, and after six months of soaking and prying, it broke loose, and a $44 headgasket and it runs better than the rebuilt engine one. What I fixed right stays fixed. What I patch works for a while. and there doesn"t seem to be a part I can"t get from the dealer or walts tractor from internet. Good Luck Wayne

Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects.
