I hear you on that age comment - I just replaced the front axle on my 660. I just can't move that cast iron like I would have 50 years ago. Sore for two days afterwards. My shoulder still hurts.
In any case, your axle should slip right into the differential. Sometimes you have to stand on your head and drink a few more cups of coffee to get the splines lined up. But once you do - thunk, its in.
I would check everything out now that its apart. I should not have come out that hard. See if you can find the cause, then correct it.
Also, when you put it back together, check the end play on the axle. If my memory is any good, it should be about .020. Too little and the two axles will drag on each other, too much and its hard on the bearing. End play is adjusted by adding or deleting shims. Post if you need help on that.
