I don't know much about the serial numbers. Others here can help you with that. Those blocks are all pretty much the same - both gas and diesel are interchangeable even. Personally I would use a later block. They can easily be identified by the standard frost plugs and not the screw in type. The newer block would allow you to use a cheap alternator and the later 3600 style tach cluster which is driven off the top of the oil pump - under the oil filter. I have learned to never mess with one of those blocks without replacing the 4 soft/frost plugs in the back of the block and head. They will leak on you and require a split to replace.
