We have a winner! NWMO with his number 2 suggestion of a real engie problem is right on. The engine in this tractor (256 c.i. diesel) spun a rod or a main some time ago . . . and I have not disassembled it to see what it takes to repair it yet.
And yes . . . I do know it's a spun bearing because of some of the noises it was making (screeching, hammering, etc.) and the fluctuation on the hydraulic oil pressure gauge that I plumbed into the pressure switch port on the block.
