If I remember correctly (on pre-65 models), the right side of the filter is secure due to the fitting it attaches to being bolted/firm. The "return", on the left side (as you sit on the tractor) attaches to a long (12"+) tube that runs to the bottom of the housing/reservoir. On the end of that tube, there should be a "U" clip that rests over a casting ridge in the reservoir that keeps it more or less in place.
