The usual telltale on a bad head gasket is the puking of coolant out the overflow every minute or two (depending on severity)... and black frothing of the coolant when you remove the rad cap. What you see could range from being fairly normal to plain worn out depending on how bad it really is.... or as Bern suggested... actual steam could well indicate a pinholed block. If it is a block problem you will generally find coolant in the oil at some point, probably sooner than later.
