Run a diesel rated 15W40 in it and see what happens... Beyond that I'd say you're getting due for a rebuild if the oil consumption bothers you a lot. To put things in perspective tho... a green leaker can go through a gallon of oil in less time so don't feel too bad. The lunch time stop is quite literally to top off the oil and check the fuel...
