My tach wasn't working when I got my 4000. The needle would only go up to about 600 no matter how fast the engine was going, but the hour meter worked fine. I finally figured out that a piece of the bezel gasket had deteriorated and fallen down and gotten wedged behind the needle. I took the instrument cluster apart, removed the offending piece of gasket and put it back together and it works fine now.
If you want an idea of what the parts look like in the tach drive at the back of the generator, you should go to the new Holland parts look up web site. First, go to the main New Holland North America Agriculture web site by CLICKING HERE. Then point your mouse at "Parts and Service" up near the top of the page and a little menu will pop up. Click on "Search for Parts" on the little pop-up menu and you'll be taken to the parts search web page. Then type in 4400 as your model number and click the Search button. Then click on "4400 3 CYL UTILITY TRACTOR (1/65-12/74)". Then click on "Electrical System" and then click on "11G01 GENERATOR & RELATED PARTS".
