Hey, Coyote, the end with the "pellet" faces toward the engine (where the fluid circulates from)since it's the part that senses the heat. From what I can gather, the looseness is designed to let air escape so that you don't get a vacuum in the system (unless maybe you just have the wrong part) Learned it here! HTH, Doug
