Smoke.... there is a limit to what the injectors will inject. Once you hit a certain point you won't get any more power and mabey not a lot more smoke. Also... if you don't have the air to burn the fuel or even half burn the fuel it's not going to make more power. After a while you're just washin' down the walls.
Compression should be in the 400-450 psi range provided that the starter is winding her over at 200 rpm or so. If pressure is lower squirt a tablespoon or two of oil in and recheck and see if it improves. If it does... rings are bad. If it doesn't you've probably got valve trouble.
