The shifter sits on the shifter shaft and is held in place by a nut. Under the shifter is a spring that keeps the shifter pushed up in the netural position and a half moon key that keeps the shifter in line with the shifter shaft. Remove the nut; pry the shifter up; and you will see the spring and key. Remove these two pieces; unbolt and remove the trans top. The shifter shaft will stay in the trans.
