The only way to tell is to find a virgin. Once they have been repainted there is no way to tell. The serial numbers were stamped, ground off, and restamped. Any *71 or *81 SoS trans could be retamped with the 66,000 low serial number and passed as a real one. I believe there is also another serial number on the opposite side of the tranny, but this also can easily be stamped in a donor. To be a Real GOLD one, it has to have the original paint. I think 871, 881, 971, and 981 were all eligible to be GOLD.
