The alternator is NOT a "Delco". It WAS a Delco, which has been butchered by aftermarket "one-wire" components. MOST LIKELY, the threaded stud you have been grounding is a "TACH" connection. Continuing to ground that connection will "let all the smoke out" of the alternator, if you haven't ALREADY done that! It's REALLY simple to add an "Idiot light" or a $1.00 diode to a $10.00 "boneyard" alternator, and make an alternator that will excite at low RPM's. The diode, as shown, or an "idiot light" in the same wire serve the same purpose.
