Having made my living in high performance hydraulics, it seems to me that controlling the suction side is very poor practice, and causes the problems you mention rather than mitigates them. The question becomes, what do they use today, after the patents have expired? Also, Ford had to stop using radius rods that moved out with the extension of front axles. But after the patent expired they went back to the former design in 1964, if I remember.
