Using a washer will be OK as long as the filter is sealed properly at both ends so that the oil will have to pass through the filter to get cleaned and get back to the Oil Pan. The spring and the washer is often thrown out with the old filter and not noticed, the problem then is that the oil does not get cleaned at all as it can flow through the canister without passing through the filter itself. There are a lot of tractors out there without the this spring and plate and that is why some engines are badly worn as they are using dirty oil continuously for lubrication..John(UK)...fergusontractors@hotmail.com
