Hopefully I understand your dilema correctly. It has been a number of years since I removed a W-4 engine but if I recall correctly the dowel pins won't slide out like they normally do on an automobile engine. If they have threads on them then the proper way to take it apart is to pull the dowel pins out first like John M suggested by using a nut on the threaded portion. The impact wrench isn't necessary.....just makes it more fun.
