List may not be wrong, just misleading. For some reason diesel tractors leaving farmall works must have stopped in the last 1/3 or so of 1952. MDV 12516 was the lowest serial number SM shown as built in 1953, SMD was close behind. Other SM tractor serial numbers first built in 1953. SMV-20498, SMCH-20623, SM-21074.
They have a monthly serial number list on line now from the ones sent to the wisconsin historical society. You can search for International harvester serial records. Can't tell you exactly how. Need to click and follow to find farmall works serial numbers.
Think Ricks tractor started out as a reguler SM gas tractor below serial # 21074.
Should add, if you find the monthly serial number list for 1952. Look for the line with FBK. It won't say anything about SM, but starts off as serial numbers for regular M tractors. On over the numbers drop and those are a regular SM tractor. 17,000 something was the first built in december of 1952.

I can think of a few common, ordinary sounds in my daily life, too.
