You didn't mention the wires. How are they? Your situation covers a wide range of possible difficulties, both electrical and mechanical. I suggest you get a vacuum gauge and install it in the intake manifold. A vacuum gauge tells more about an engine than any other piece of test equipment. It'll tell of a stuck valve, leaking gaskets, late ignition timing, etc. You can find instructions on how to read it in nearly any automotive manual. You can use any gauge that reads 0-30 inches of Hg.
